Q&A with Matz

Here's a partial transcript of a Q&A with Matz at RubyConf, via Chris.

Q: Did you start Ruby to scratch a particular itch? A: "No. The only problem I wanted to solve was to fill my spare time. It was during the depression time in Japan, and I had a job, but no assignment, and I was bored, so I started Ruby."

A painter paints, and a programmer...

Also, he recommends checking out Steve Dekorte's language IO and Haskell.

Here's a weblog with much more info on RubyConf, including audio for the presentations.

Update: More on RubyConf, via Chris.

  1. Aristotle points towards that example of Haskell's type system catching an infinite looping bug that I remember seeing a while back. While I'm not sure if that's the particular example (though it may be), the point's the same.
