You know, I have to wonder... I know Wordpress shoehorns into Akismet, which does a great job at filtering out spam... is there a way for you to do the same? Is there some open API out there where you can log in and check against a spam database like that for each of your comments?
Might want to look at the source code for the Wordpress Akismet plugin. You could sign up on Wordpress.com to create an account and get an API number (which is what you have to do even if you host offsite like I do... I have the wordpress.com account so I have the proper UID for Akismet), and then query their database for each of your comments.
