The Changing Workplace - Smashing the Clock

The Changing Workplace - Smashing the Clock.

At most companies, going AWOL during daylight hours would be grounds for a pink slip. Not at Best Buy. The nation's leading electronics retailer has embarked on a radical--if risky--experiment to transform a culture once known for killer hours and herd-riding bosses. The endeavor, called ROWE, for "results-only work environment," seeks to demolish decades-old business dogma that equates physical presence with productivity. The goal at Best Buy is to judge performance on output instead of hours.

To read. From what I understand it's been extremely successful.

LOL...I know why you would be interested in this.

The only problem is that most people end up working as part of a team. If you let everybody set their own hours, you end up with some people coming in at 6am and leaving at 3pm. Others coming in at 12pm and leaving at 8pm. It becomes next to impossible to co-ordinate anything. THen you end up in situations where "well, Keith was supposed to have this done...I guess we'll find out around lunchtime when he comes in...what should we do till then?".

We tried the totally flexible work hours at a dot-com in Seattle. It lasted a month before the manager established "core hours" of 10-4, which meant "set your own hours as long as you are here no later than 10 and don't leave before 4".

So we had to resort to 2 hour lunches...
