The Mini programming language:
Here is a simple single-pass compiler for an even simpler programming language called Mini... the only real motivation for this project was to show students in my compiler course that writing a simple backend is not that hard.
Part of the quote from the announcement for Mini 0.3. Links via the Programming Language News blog, which I'm catching up with a little.
Oh, and here's the PLNews' new URL. Why they couldn't transfer their content and do permanent redirects...

Wired News: Penguin Poo Paper Earns Ig Nobel (via Michael):

vnc2swf - Screen Recorder. Now in Python!
The Python version (pyvnc2swf) runs on any platform which supports Python and Pygame, including Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mac OS X, and Windows. The reason of making another implementation is that there are lots of requests from Windows users to support their platform. Also, since the entire program is rewritten in Python, it is much cleaner and easy to add extra features. This version is now being actively developed.

John Fund: Miers Remorse: Conservatives are right to be skeptical, via PoliPundit. Didn't finish reading yet, but the article has some fascinating history about how Republican presidents have sucked at appointing Supreme Court justices.
Update: Glenn Reynolds calls Fund's piece "devastating" and has a bunch of other stuff about Miers' nomination.
