And if you go too far up, abstraction-wise, you run out of oxygen. Sometimes smart thinkers just don't... – Joel Spolsky

Sam Ruby likes/uses Ubuntu too

Sam Ruby likes/uses Ubuntu too. I've been using Ubuntu as my main OS for a few weeks now, and I'm not going back to Windows. I haven't even booted Windows up in a few weeks. For a bunch of people Ubuntu seems to be the first Linux distribution that really hits some kind of sweet spot that gets us to make the switch.

Update: Spoke too soon. I needed to play some WAV files that I couldn't get any program I had for Linux to play correctly, so I had to boot into Windows. Incidentally, the last day I'd used Windows before today was April 19.

  1. Here's an interesting interview with director Matthew Vaughn on X-Men 3. Key bit:

Matthew Vaughn's Stamp on X-Men 3: “I think fantasy should all be based in reality, and then it becomes believable. You have to be able to relate to the characters. X-men was pretty good because you saw the flaws and the conflict that they’re going through, but I think that conflict needs to be expanded on. I wanted the villains to be less [cartoony]. At the moment, I think a lot of moustache twirling happened in the last films. I want to get rid of that and make the villains really scary and more realistic.”

Matthew Vaughn's Gritty X-Men 3: “Gritty doesn’t mean violent. I liked how Joss Whedon dealt with everything. That’s more of my sentiment.” But it does mean as little CGI as possible. “I hate CGI. I’m trying to do everything in camera. Listen, there are times you have to use CGI, but I want to do as much in camera as possible. I’m a gamer, I like video games and when I watch movies, I feel like half the time you’re watching an extended sequence on a game. You just switch off.”

    Excellent. Via WHEDONesque.

  2. Python Challenge, "The first programming riddle on the net", Via Ryan. It's another one of those "answer to the puzzle is the URL of the next page" things, but this one looks really fun.

Update: Lambda is on it. Ehud links to solutions.

  4. Reynolds:

Meanwhile, there's another big capture in Pakistan. I don't usually bother to mention those "senior Al Qaeda aide captured" stories, because individually they're not news. But over time, they make a difference, and they are. The terror war isn't over, but the strategy of making Al Qaeda fight it on their own turf, not ours, seems to have worked out pretty well.

    Indeed.

I almost feel human again!

Now that classes are over, even though I have yet to complete finals, I'm beginning to feel human again! I took a day completely off today. Had sushi with my dad for lunch, then watched 4 episodes (including the 2 hour pilot) of Firefly with my friend's girlfriend, then my friend came home from work and we had dinner, and watched American Idol (I still want Carrie to win) and House (which is a really good show).

So, today was my day of rest and now I start working on:

  • Finals: Kant paper due Thurs, then three finals next week.
  • Preparing for my trip to Nashville and California
  • Moving! Where do I even start?

I still can't believe how differently I feel now that classes are over.
