Ovaries

The thing that kind of scares me about women, regarding childbearing, is that while men create new sperm all the time, women live their whole lives with all the eggs they're ever going to have. So, if a man does drugs or anything else to make him want to think twice about siring a child right then, he can stay clean and wait a few months for a new batch of sperm. However, with a woman, it seems like any poison she puts in her body may likely affect any children she conceives at any time in the future. Can anyone tell me if this is medically accurate?

I'm certainly not qualified to answer this, but I passed it on to a friend in med school and I'll let you know what he says.

I finally got his answer. I just pasted your post to him in an AIM window and let him respond. He's an upper med student at Duke Medical, so he knows his stuff:

Anch: hmm, well the real critical period is when the kid is developing in utero
Anch: not so much what she does before
M. Bean: How so?
M. Bean: And what about with the guy, is that how it works for them?
Anch: yeah, sperm regenerate
M. Bean: And why doesn't it matter so much what she does before?
Anch: well there's not much she could do to really screw up an egg that would remain viable
Anch: and could potentially be fertilized
M. Bean: So basically... an egg is pretty well safe at the point it's made, but once it's fertilized and it is getting nutrients, that's really where her druggie habits will fuck the child up?
Anch: yeah after conception you have to be careful
M. Bean: Ok. Anything else to add before I pass that on?
Anch: nope
M. Bean: Thanks.
