  1. lgf: Russia Will Supply Iran with Nuclear Fuel.

And if John F. Kerry had been elected, the United States would have been doing the same thing.

I've mentioned this a few times before. Though, I'm not sure why they'll take Russia's nuclear fuel and not ours.

Mark Steyn: The Arabs' Berlin Wall has crumbled

Mark Steyn: The Arabs' Berlin Wall has crumbled (via LGF):

Three years ago - April 6 2002, if you want to rummage through the old Spectators in the attic - I wrote: "The stability junkies in the EU, UN and elsewhere have, as usual, missed the point. The Middle East is too stable. So, if you had to pick only one regime to topple, why not Iraq? Once you've got rid of the ruling gang, it's the West's best shot at incubating a reasonably non-insane polity. That's why the unravelling of the Middle East has to start not in the West Bank but in Baghdad."

I don't like to say I told you so. But, actually, I do like to say I told you so. What I don't like to do is the obligatory false self-deprecatory thing to mitigate against the insufferableness of my saying I told you so. But nevertheless I did.

Oh my gosh read the whole thing.

Very interesting paper. Highlights include their explanations of their conversion from a stack-based to a register-based VM, the merits of their "tagged union"-based data type, their array-optimized "table" (associative array) data structure, and their implementation of closures.

CNN.com - Lebanon government quits

From CNN's homepage: CNN.com - Lebanon government quits:

Lebanon's pro-Syrian government abruptly resigned today during a stormy parliamentary debate, prompting a tremendous roar from tens of thousands of anti-government protesters. The demonstrators, awash in a sea of red, white and green Lebanese flags, had demanded the government's resignation -- and the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon -- since the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri two weeks ago.

  1. Lorie blames the international media for Putin's ignorance. I don't know if she's right about Putin (does Putin really get his all his news and understanding of the US from the Russian media?), but I constantly wonder to what extent the anti-American opinions of many of those outside the US are shaped predominantly by the opinions fed to them by their media.

Ovaries

The thing that kind of scares me about women, regarding childbearing, is that while men create new sperm all the time, women live their whole lives with all the eggs they're ever going to have. So, if a man does drugs or anything else to make him want to think twice about siring a child right then, he can stay clean and wait a few months for a new batch of sperm. However, with a woman, it seems like any poison she puts in her body may likely affect any children she conceives at any time in the future. Can anyone tell me if this is medically accurate?

Captain's Quarters: Syria Coughed Up Saddam's Brother

Captain's Quarters: Syria Coughed Up Saddam's Brother (via Glenn). Hindrocket at Power Line comments.

John Cole comments:

When Bush declares that we will not be driven from Iraq, and that we aren't going to run away from tough situations, many on the hard left chide him for 'cowboy' tough talk (or start with the chichenhawk nonsense), and it is their unwillingness or inability to understand the outcomes of their weakness that makes them so dangerous. We have paid a hefty price in both blood and treasure in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the War on Terror, and hopefully we are rounding the corner in the region. When vile and oppressive regimes who have previously thumbed their noses at the United States and the rest of the world begin to re-think their positions, it may be a sign that we are starting to see the real results of our dedication to the cause and our unwavering will.

Emphasis mine.

OxBlog on Bush's meeting with Putin in Bratislava

OxBlog on Bush's meeting with Putin in Bratislava (via Glenn):

When Putin's tells something to you and I, he is probably lying through his teeth. But Putin is smart enough to know that he can't constantly lie to Bush and get away with it. He can lie to the Russian public and to the American public without consequences. But every gangster knows better than to f*** with the godfather.

Like Reagan, Bush has a very personal diplomatic style. Again like Reagan, Bush pretty much speaks his mind, both on the record and off. Thus, when Bush says that Putin made a serious commitment to democracy at a private meeting with the President of the United States of America, that is exactly what Bush means. He has put Putin on the record and expects him to live up to his word, the same way that Bush lives up to his.

...

You might say the glass is half full. Putin's hedges are not exactly what I want to hear. Yet whereas Third World dictators have a long history of insisting that their dictatorship is actually a new form of democracy, Putin has abandoned this pledge and acknowledged that democracy has a universal essence. What matters isn't whether Putin really believes this. What matters is that he told it to the President of the United States, who will be very angry if Putin goes back on his word.

For the reasons given above, I think Bush did a superb job at Bratislava. Now comes the hard part. For the first time, however, I am confident that Bush really understands what is at stake in Moscow.
