Anyone really interested in AJAX programming should check out Microsoft's CRM project.
I was absolutely amazed at what they were able to accomplish with JScript, XSLT and XmlHttpRequest. I am most familiar with the 1.1 version, and I don't know how much it has changed, but CRM was by far the most usable web-based application I have ever seen.
Back in 2000 there was no name for the paradigm, but I immediately recognized the value and started using the techniques.
