1. Charles Miller: No Swap for You!

   Ultimately, I realised that of the two main processes on the box, I trusted them to regulate their own memory more than I trusted Linux... So I turned off swap. And everything seems to be running pretty smoothly... Like I said to Matthew Porter at the time: “The box may die hard. But only if I’m very, very wrong.”

2. Charles Krauthammer pummels John Edwards on his promises of medical miracles if Kerry is elected, and calls Kerry on his lie about a federal "ban" on stem-cell research, among other things. Do read.

   In my 25 years in Washington, I have never seen a more loathsome display of demagoguery. Hope is good. False hope is bad. Deliberately, for personal gain, raising false hope in the catastrophically afflicted is despicable.

   ...to exploit the desperate hopes of desperate people with the promise of Christ-like cures is beyond the pale.
   
   There is no apologizing for Edwards's remark. It is too revealing. There is absolutely nothing the man will not say to get elected.

3. folderblog:

   folderblog is a ~20kb PHP script that automatically displays the images placed in a given subdirectory. It can be used as either a blog or as a gallery — and just about anything in between.

4. the electric sheep screen-saver (via Justin):

   When the screen-saver is activated, the screen goes black and an animated 'sheep' appears. Behind the scenes, the screen-saver contacts a server and joins the parallel computation of new sheep. Every fifteen minutes 24/7 a new sheep is born and distributed to all clients for display. Each sheep is an animated fractal flame.

   I'm going to continue donating my spare cycles to curing cancer (you should too), but if that ever happens I'd like to try running this thing.

5. SoftWire "is a run-time x86 assembler, written in C++. It can be used as a JIT compiler back-end for scripting languages, or for dynamic code generation of optimized inner loops." Via Steve.
