Actually, pens are allowed as long as they have been approved by the committee, which I am sure it was - I don't think Kerry would risk everything for a pen.

And why take out a piece of paper in such an obvious way? Seriously, if he wanted to, he had plenty of time to take it out of a pocket of something during the debate.

It’s a pen, nothing more, get over it.

Well, both candidates were given pen and paper anyway. It's normal to take notes during a debate. It's possible Kerry just wanted to use his own fancy pen, though even that's still a violation of the rules. To me it looks like he took out a paper, but without a better view we can't be sure what it was.

In any case, here's a high resolution video. It definitely looks like he's taking something white and straight out of his pocket -- not likely to be a pen. It really looks like some index cards or a folded paper. It even seems like he flips something if you look carefully. If that's the case, it might be some kind of PDA, though one thought that came to mind is that maybe it was a compact so he could look at himself in the mirror

These republican losers have to find an excuse for their failure. I clearly saw nothing that indicated he pulled anything out of his pocket other than a pen. The guy obviously, has large hands. If we are going to nit-pick, why don't we talk about Bush starting his responses while Kerry's time had not ended. I saw several times, Kerry stopped talking and the light was clearly still on and not flashing when Bush jumped in and started talking during Kerry's time. That should be against the rules, so I guess Bush is a cheater. However, I don't care with 30 pages of rules it doesn't really matter. Kerry should use former president Bush's statement after a debate and tell America, "I kicked her little ass". Because that's exactly what Kerry did.

Any approved materials were placed there by the debate administrators. The candidates were specifically barred from bringing anything to the debate -- pen and paper were provided.
