I saw him writing stuff, so it could be a pen...

Actually, pens are allowed as long as they have been approved by the committee, which I am sure it was - I don't think Kerry would risk everything for a pen.
And why take out a piece of paper in such an obvious way? Seriously, if he wanted to, he had plenty of time to take it out of a pocket of something during the debate.
It’s a pen, nothing more, get over it.
Keith (http://keithdevens.com/) wrote:
Well, both candidates were given pen and paper anyway. It's normal to take notes during a debate. It's possible Kerry just wanted to use his own fancy pen, though even that's still a violation of the rules. To me it looks like he took out a paper, but without a better view we can't be sure what it was.

Why do something like that and blow up everything? Kerry doesn't look that stupid.

Hahaha, no comment
In any case, here's a high resolution video. It definitely looks like he's taking something white and straight out of his pocket -- not likely to be a pen. It really looks like some index cards or a folded paper. It even seems like he flips something if you look carefully. If that's the case, it might be some kind of PDA, though one thought that came to mind is that maybe it was a compact so he could look at himself in the mirror

Bush Blows Debate
;)
You remember that part right, when kerry said his piece on what he would do in Iraq, and Bush interupted with an awkward silence.
Keith (http://keithdevens.com/) wrote:
Hahaha. I've heard that theory too.

These republican losers have to find an excuse for their failure. I clearly saw nothing that indicated he pulled anything out of his pocket other than a pen. The guy obviously, has large hands. If we are going to nit-pick, why don't we talk about Bush starting his responses while Kerry's time had not ended. I saw several times, Kerry stopped talking and the light was clearly still on and not flashing when Bush jumped in and started talking during Kerry's time. That should be against the rules, so I guess Bush is a cheater. However, I don't care with 30 pages of rules it doesn't really matter. Kerry should use former president Bush's statement after a debate and tell America, "I kicked her little ass". Because that's exactly what Kerry did.

I liked this quote on LGF:
It’s sad that we’ve reached a place in our society where people can actually argue that a presidential candidate cheating in a debate isn’t a big deal and anyone who cares about it is nit-picking, ankle-biting, or (insert your term here).

Question answered... check out the third update to this post. I'm really glad this can be put to rest. I was very relieved when I got home and saw that last post on LGF.

I told you so, however on the high-res video it looked like he fiddled with a piece of paper.
And who can say if the pen wasn't approved?
Keith (http://keithdevens.com/) wrote:

Any approved materials were placed there by the debate administrators. The candidates were specifically barred from bringing anything to the debate -- pen and paper were provided.

At the vice presidential debate both candidates used pens. What is the big deal?
Keith (http://keithdevens.com/) wrote:
Ryan, the big deal isn't that he used a pen. You've clearly not been following the discussion.
Ryan (http://www.trolocsis.com) wrote:
A pen is a pen is a pen. Even though he didn't use the correct pen seems quite petty to call him on. What about his thoughts on Iraq or other policies?
Keith (http://keithdevens.com/) wrote:
My gosh Ryan, it's not about the pen!
Since you asked, here are some recent posts about the debate and some of Kerry's policies.
