You really are terribly sad, ignorant people -- low acheivers, loud complainers, poor spellers. Why don't you read "Fuck The South" and try to refute it. Its author makes three basic points.

1. America was founded by "blue-staters": by Bostonains and Philadelphians and New Yorkers and Marylanders; check the original 13 colonies sometime. The South tried to leave the Union in order to continue to hold captives in indefinite periods of involuntary servitude. Nice one, guys: The key word there is "values."

2. The Southern and Plain states are the federal chowhounds: they consume the federal budget that is paid for by the blue states. It is incontrovertible; states like New York, California, Connecticut, Massachussetts, Illinois, pay in far more than they get out; the impoverished red states are the drag on the enconomy, the national "Welfare Queen" as President Reagan would have described it.

3. Divorce rates, abortion rates, out-of-wedlock birth rates are all far higher in the red states than they are in the ones colored blue. It turns out President Reagan was right in seeing a breakdown in values being caused by handouts after all.

You can complain about "elitism" or "just no plain common sense" all you'd like, and I hope it helps you to avoid these painful facts. But those are indeed the facts.

One big problem we are all experiencing that we have to realize is that the Electoral college has created division where there doesnt have to be any (or at least as much as there is).

While there are very valid points that:
1. The people (or rather states) that pay for the government seem to be governed by the people (or again, states) that recieve from the government.
2. Obviously more people in the red states voted for Bush (and more for Kerry- or was is agin' Bush?- in the blue states, if you accept the vote tallies) and therefore are assumed to share his "values".

The other truths are that huge numbers of people voted for Kerry in the South and huge numbers of people voted Bush in the North.

I hate this president. I think he is the worst person to ever have slimed this country and is a disgrace to our history and our future. But I also hate that if you live in West Virginia where I do, one from California (my home state) would assume you to be a "red-stater." And that is a result of the goddamn electoral map that keeps getting shown everywhere, and ITS TEARIN' US APART as a country.

If the vote tallies were more like 90-10 in the separate states, then you would have cause for the Civil War to be refought. And I would fight. Agin' Bush, if I havent made myself clear. As it is, there are enough idiots that vote Republican in my beloved home of Los Angeles even to keep us together as a country. And I guess, thank God for that. 'Cause the last thing we need is a Civil War.

We need to abandon the electoral college. It has created division where there doesn't need to be any. For those in the North, go to Charleston, SC. Deep south and as awesomely liberal a city you could find (and probably the best food and hottest women in the country, too). And those in the south that would prefer segregation (and yes, I am joking!) go to Los Angeles and ask a black dude and a white dude how many times each of them has gotten pulled over by the cops. You'll be amazed at the difference.

Also,if we didnt have the electoral college, the King of the Crackers wouldnt have had the chance to be appointed Presidente por la Vida by the Supreme Court.

As for Mr. FTS. Your angry, bitter, worthless tirade only serves to define YOU. The South is too fine a place for an arrogant asshole like YOU. I actually feel sorry for your northern brethren that they must share the air they breathe with YOU! They probably think YOU are an asshole, too!

Compassionism, tolerance, and embracement of diversity . . . those aren't liberal values, dickhead, they're American values. Remember the first line of the Declaration of Independence? I believe it's my human duty to come to people with an open mind regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, religious orientation, or socioeconomic class. I try my damndest to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. But when I've come to you with an open mind, and you stand there telling me that George Bush has restored honor and dignity to the White House, that Iraq hit us on 9/11 and had WMDs until we took them away, and that the Bible says homosexuality is a sin (I just love it when people cherry-pick the Bible for political convenience---you want to protect marriage, why don't you put your money where your mouth is and outlaw fucking divorce?), then I don't have to give you a fucking thing, because my compassion, tolerance, and embracing of diversity don't extend to people who don't take the time to identify and seek out nonpartisan information (with a little practice you can identify the wing-nuts on both sides) and learn to process that information into a political philosophy that is consistent, sound, and unhypocritical. I don't care if you're black, white, yellow, male, female, gay, straight, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, poor, rich, or middle fucking class --- if you don't know what the fuck is going on in this country don't open your fucking mouth, and please God don't vote.

The north was the one that won the war so if you southerners don’t like us leave and go back to England or shut up and get over it. A lot of motherfuckers have been saying a lot of vulgar shit about those of us who live below the Mason-Dixon. People from the Northeast have been saying that they resent us because they spend too many of their precious tax dollars �helping� us, and that we have ungratefully thrown this back into their lily-white faces by electing Bush. I think some of that polluted snow has managed to seep into their thick skulls.

First of all, not all of us voted for Bush. I voted for Kerry. All my friends voted for Kerry. Every member of my immediate family voted for Kerry. We didn�t vote for him because we liked his arrogant, lifeless, and staid Puritan ways. To the contrary, we voted for him because we have always hated Republicans, which is something that cannot be said for y�all. Yankee politics always seem confusing and petty to me, so I am hoping that a few of y�all can answer a couple of questions I have.

My first question is, if y�all hate the goddamn Republicans so much, then why the fuck did you people create the damn party in the first place? It ain�t our fault that you bourgeois assholes felt like big business needed its own party. Secondly, if you motherfuckers up there hate industrial capitalism so fuckin much, then why did you come down here and force it on us? I�d like to see some answers to that, because my ancestors supported Jeff Davis.

As far as letting the South go, go right ahead. You spoiled motherfuckers have taken this election harder than the Union army took their ass whoopin at Bull Run. We wanted to leave this industrial, money-grubbing, capital-hoardin Republican nation in the first place. You wanna bitch about your tax dollars goin to waste? Don�t send em. We never asked you to. You people are off the deep end......all of you. Most of the notes (pro and con) that I have read on this site and others like it pertaining to "FTS" seem to have been written by loud-mouth opinionated jerks cracked out of the Archie Bunker mold. I have lived a little above and below the Mason-Dixon (MD, NC, & VA) and have worked in, and traveled through, quite a few of the other states and several other countries. Ignorance is the key, fellas. Where there is ignorance, there is poverty and vice versa. Where there is ignorance, people are easily manipulated into hating someone else. There are good and not so nice people everywhere. Most of them are simply trying to get by, and enjoy their lives as much as possible. How do you think it happens that from time to time these people take up a common cause and band together to kill a bunch of people they never knew or cared about before? I'll tell you......I stole this from Mark Twain and have not quoted it exactly because I don't feel like getting up to find the book, but here goes. "One day a big man with a loud voice will stand up and sway the crowd" and that's how it happens. Soon the battle flags are going and bullets are flying. The poor schmuck in the trenches THINKS he is fighting for the common good, for mom and apple pie and all that, but he is really fighting someone else's war. The media is currently bashing FEMA, any government agency remotely connected, the president, you name it. I saw on CNN yesterday a clip that was showing dead bodies floating around and at the bottom of the screen there was a note saying that 3000 registered sex offenders had been evacuated from New Orleans. What was that all about? What are they trying to accomplish there? Katrina is an enormous natural disaster, a disaster of monumental proportions. An entire city may have been destroyed. Did ANYONE believe, can YOU believe, that the rescue and evacuation effort would run like clockwork? You must be kidding. Take my challenge, stop biting each others backs. Turn off the tube and form your own opinion. Don't let the media think for you. I gaurantee that you won't look at anything the same way if you are looking through YOUR eyes. The Civil War wasn't started because the South wanted to keep slaves, you dumbasses. The Civil War was started because a bunch of aggressive Northerners wanted to keep the "Union" together, even though southern states had absolutely no say in the so-called "Union." Lincoln wasn't even on the ballot in most southern states, and was a decidedly Northern President. And now that the Northern States have decided to ease their stranglehold on the South that has crippled southern states for so long, the South is growing rapidly, while more and more people move out of decaying, expensive, shitty Northern cities to better weather and better lifestyles here in the South. Why do you think Charlotte is the fastest-growing city in the country? Yankees suck, they think the South is full of a bunch of dumbass hicks, and they think everyone south of the Mason-Dixon line has a thick southern accent. I'm fine with them continuing to think that while more and more money and businesses come out of the North and relocate down here. I'm done with this.

I can't believe I missed this thread. I'm a New Orleanian, just moved back to a new job in the Crescent City. It's surreal and kind of wonderful, because it's more like it was before federal projects laid the groundwork for her near-destruction at every level. FTS--I read the original post and it's just plain stupid. The first successful colony and the basis for all that was worth anything in building the U.S. was Williamsburg, Va. I think there's a sound argument to be made that the founding fathers' values (whether they landed at Plymouth or anywhere else on the continent) was a lot closer to the values espoused by the "red" states. So called Blue staters are the "johnny-come-latelies" who're sucking off the teet of real America. Why didn't 9/11 totally cripple our financial industry?--cause it wasn't just in N.Y.--in fact, not even mostly or necessarily there. The real industry, wealth, people of the U.S. are there and everywhere else, including, increasingly, the south (welcome, again, Keith). Yes, those of us who live here would, in some ways, like to leave the Emperial Union and take our oil and gas and other resources with us. We'd like to get an even shake and some credit for what our region and people have and continue to do for this country (ever notice gas isn't that much more in Chicago than in New Orleans--guess what, we bear all the burden of production and the rest of the country get's our land's "blood" with free shipping). We're not trying to secede any more; we're taking over. To the author of FTS, get used to it, get some manners, or FOff.

Hell, the French and Spanish were here before that... the reason Plimouth Plantation was significant was because they sought political and spiritual emancipation from the crown. Jamesburg was a simple colony of the British Commonwealth who were content to follow a state religion and pay taxes without representation as we now know it.

You see, the matter is a bit more complicated than deciding whether 1607 is a smaller number than 1620. It's about the ideal upon which this Republic is currently based. Had the colonies gone their separate ways before the revolution the North would still be the US, but the South would now be Lower Canada... with cheaper cigarettes.

Well I'm from below the Mason Dixon Line (D.C.) i dont neccessarily know if that makes me a southener but that's not why i am commenting this forum, website whatever... I think you northeners and southeners need to grow up and face the facts, the South does has a SHIT load of flaws and has continuously gave our country a bad name (i.e. Civil War, Bush, etc.) but the North also has it's problems too, i don't neccessarily know any major ones but that isn't my point, my point is we need to stop fighting over something as asinine as an imaginary boundary by just throw harsh statements at each other just because of the way they are.
