Random things

Lots of things on the "Why do Java developers make things so hard?" thread. Here's the original article at LinuxWorld. There are good comments at the Tucows blog. Russell Beattie has an especially good post and lots of really good comments to go with it. The consensus seems to be that it's a cultural issue, much more than it is a language issue. Kayode got me started with a good post about it. Update: A response by one of the developers of one of the libraries criticized in the original article.

I have some more things to say about the three things that have most influenced my design thinking lately... I'll probably separate this part out into its own post in a bit and talk about YAGNI, "Simple and Boring", and "Libraries not frameworks". Dan's going to try to make it to a talk at MIT on a grand unified theory of garbage collection. It sounds fascinating.

TV Stuff

Via WHEDONesque, check out this great "behind the scenes" pic from a recent (great!) episode of Angel. If you haven't seen it, you won't get it.

Wonderfalls has moved permanently to Thursday after Tru Calling. I'll probably wind up watching both now. Tru Calling has actually been getting better... it seems like it might actually be a decent show. Eliza Dushku has something about her... she's pretty, yes, but she has charisma. It seems like she makes anything she's in better.

OK, seriously. What is the deal with Fox?... I don't get it. It's like the same clothing company making both sharp, moderately expensive leather jackets and $5 "Official Bikini Inspector" T-shirts.

Granted, Fox will probably cancel "Wonderfalls" in the next few weeks. Sorry to be such a pessimist, but it's one of those shows that's just too good for television. But I do think you have to give Fox credit for putting it on the air in the first place, when most networks would have just passed in favor of another reality show.

The article includes an awful, terrible picture of Caroline Dhavernas, who I normally think is very beautiful.

And... Family Guy renewed!. Some hope that it portends well for other prematurely cancelled shows chances of being resurrected (cough, Firefly). Though, we have a movie now, BIATCH.
