Woo, my friend just told me that James White over at Alpha Omega Ministries has a blog. Unfortunately, he doesn't use standard software, have permalinks, have sensible archives, ping weblogs.com or blo.gs, have any kind of feed, etc. It's pretty amazing how much we expect from a blog now (but rightly so). Maybe I'll contact his webmaster and tell him to set James up with MovableType
(Or maybe WordPress now -- competition is good).
.nu domains are too expensive. 60 Euros for two years. According to xe.com, that's about 75 bucks. Maybe if I could register for one year at a time... Or, if I were working I'm pretty sure I'd get this domain I want. Sigh.
Whoa, they charge 150 Euros to transfer to another registrar, and 10 Euros to update name server information.
I checked, and I can register a .nu domain with Dotster (the registrar I currently use), but it's even more expensive ($90 for two years). Though, there's probably none of the draconian stuff I just mentioned.
Ack! MySQL is damaging my brain. Because it doesn't have subqueries, I have to think of all these unnatural ways to do queries to get what I want. And because I can't do subqueries, my brain is starting to not go there anymore. Working with MySQL is actually hurting my database skills. Suck.
For instance, right now I can't do a WHERE NOT EXISTS() predicate, and very frequently I find myself having to make lists of all possible Foo_Ids and do a query like "SELECT * FROM Foo WHERE Foo_Ids IN(".join(',',$ids).")" based on that. Evil.
A common solution to some things is to do a LEFT JOIN and select out the ones where one of the fields from the right table is NULL, but that's not always applicable.
