Soon after I posted this I thought "I wonder what the statistics would be for Americans", and I figured "Very possibly worse." I'd be interested to find out.

I find that a very odd figure, seeing as growing up in UK and going to school here we did WWII twice. Once in 6th grade and once in 9th grade, and I stopped taking history in my last two years of school). Both those times we covered the Auschwitz (although the first time in not much detail, probably just spoke about concentration camps and never naming Auschwitz). If the question had been 'Do you know what the Nazi concentration camps were in WWII?' or 'Do you know what the Nazi did the Jews and other ethnic groups they didn't like?' I'm guessing you'd get a lot higher response.

I thought the exact same thing as Sparticus. Not only did we cover both world wars in depth at school, but we actually went all the way over to Poland to visit Auschwitz, via three or four other countries. When I told friends and family where I was going nobody asked where it was or was confused, everyone knew that it was a concentration camp.
"This may be one reason why the “Bush=Hitler” inanities fall so easily from the mouths of the Euroleft":
This may just be the single most appallingly stupid thing I have heard Charles say, and I am certainly no fan of his.
YES CHARLES, US EUROPEANS KNOW F*CK ALL ABOUT HITLER AND CONCENTRATION CAMPS. WE NEED THE EDUCATED LIKES OF YOU TO SHOW US YOKELS THE TRUTH.
Sorry. But come on, the reaction to him saying something like that is understandable, right?

Well, you're not the one making the Bush=Hitler comparisons (I assume), so his comments don't apply to you (so don't feel insulted).

I would be shocked if 40% of Americans younger than 35 had heard of Auschwitz.
Without context, this data doesn't say much about Britain.
