Unfortunately, there aren't really any concrete examples I can give. Basically, I've given up on trying to write a great "web application framework" for my site. It turns out a lot of the things I liked about my CMS/WAF can just be used as libraries, and a lot of other stuff just isn't necessary.
As my current self looks back on the attempts of my past self, the code often looks like what some pretentious asshole would write. I had hooks where I didn't need them (I look back and say "hmm... what was this doing again? Oh, nothing! Great... jerk!"), and other stuff that as I rewrite it in my new, much more sensible way, just gets way shorter and simpler.

yeah, i think most people who do creative things feel that way about their earlier work...an artist is often his own worst critic.
