Did you folks read the article? The kids totally mocked the games. They couldn't get past the minimal graphics and simplistic interactions. They wanted super-bombs and graphic realism, which fits their definition of "gameplay".

Well, we weren't saying that pong and ET are the best examples of gameplay. We were just reminiscing in general.
My position is that sometimes the pursuit of "graphic realism" leaves you worse off because other aspects of the game get short shrift. Furthermore, because of that mindset, games like pac man, lemmings, etc. wouldn't be invented today. So, we've cut ourselves off from some potentially great games.

Hey, I'm with you there. Heck, I'll take it one step further-- I loved the text/adventure games. I hope I can get my toddler to play Zork, Adventure, Planetfall, etc. when he gets older but I'm probably dreaming.

Ahhh, the good old days, when game designers, actually designed, games with gameplay. I think it just goes to show, video games, just like movies its not about the flashy graphics or the fancy special effects , its all about the gameplay (or the story line in a movie's case).. That's not to say today's games don't have gameplay, many do, but most titles, rely too much of the eye candy... Don't beleive me.. rememebr in the heyday, when arcade machines, would be lined with people's quarters, just to hold their spots, next time your in an arcade tell me if you see that..
