I was thinking of mentioning Babylon 5 and Farscape since those were non-Star Trek science fiction shows that seemed to have a very enthusiastic following, but I've never seen a whole episode of either.

Well, Farscape was ok. I've only seen it when I've been up home because it wasn't shown on irish TV, but if you have the right kind of arial, or have cable, you can get the BBC, who did show it. It had the most annoying theme tune though, almost as bad as the Enterprise one.
Other than those two (and LEXX, but that doesn't count) I can't think of any half decent space operas recently.
Oh, and I haven't seen Firefly so I've no way to judge it. I'll leave that to you

My boyfriend is nuts about Firefly and Serenity and Star Trek, so you can imagine how much I'm suffering. About the only science fiction I care to watch is Star Wars episodes 4, 5, and 6, a.k.a., the ones that came out 30 years ago. Of course, I was a little kid then, and I thought it was really well done. I would think I'd still enjoy watching them, as the writing was good, compelling, and actually made you root for the good guy.
On the other hand, Firefly, et al., is some of the most boring stuff I've ever seen. And I will NEVER understand why Star Trek is seen as brilliant by people with bona fide high IQ's.
I think most science fiction is for people who have very little going on in their lives, so escaping is the only thing they have to live for.
If anyone cares, I'd like to suggest Lucifer's Hammer. It is an end of the world novel I read when I was 11 or 12, and I still enjoy reading it today. The authors have written other novels, but this is the only one of theirs that I've read. Sci-Fi has to be realistic for me to enjoy it. But space westerns where people still wear glasses and ride horses, well, what the hell happened to laser surgery and land speeders? Firefly DESERVED to get cancelled.

I think you miss the fact that good tv is driven by character interaction and not nifty gadgets. The sci-fi elements are a vehicle to tell a compelling story. The elements of Firefly's story you question are explained within the show, and that show had some of the best characters, character interaction, and dialogue ever to grace the small screen. Those are the things that count.

Ok, it's a while back, but it counts!
