Trillian does not display AIM user profiles correctly nor does it display rich text during chats (only displays the font you choose... for both you and the person you're chatting with). Trillian's ability to support multiple protocols is definitely badass--it's its strongest selling point, but also its only (for me, at least) over DeadAIM.

yo it itsnt free anymore. this sucks you have to pay 1.50 to get deadaim

AOL has problems with trillian hacking their protocol, how can deadaim get away with making money off it?!
Anyway gaim.sourceforge.net is always there.
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:
DeadAIM isn't a separate program that accesses AOL's network, like Trillian does. All it does is wrap Instant Messenger's windows in some of its own, so it still uses AOL's software underneath. So it has nothing to do with DeadAIM "hacking their protocol".
I don't think the author is trying to get "rich"... like he says: "Due to the popularity of DeadAIM and the lack of donations it has become necessary to charge a $1.50 download fee to cover our costs."
BTW, tried GAIM, didn't like it, unfortunately. It had some nice features, but the interface was too clunky, and it wound up taking up too much screen space.
Sapphire wrote:
was DeadAIM free before? because it is currently not free.
I also tried GAIM.. i did not like it's appearance...
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:
DeadAIM used to be available for download for free, but like the quote I posted above says, it got too popular and therefore too costly for bandwidth.
The primary thing I don't like about GAIM is that you can't specify the log location. Other than that, the main window is just too big because of the huge icons they use...

AIM+ seems to be a good alternative. Haven't tried it myself yet.

it is crazy that you ahve to pay for deadaim. my friends and i have all downloaded it. now to get it on other computers i own i have to pay a 1.5 for each time i download it...that is some crazy shit. i hope whoever is making this mad money is putting it to charity or something good like that. MAKE IT FREE AGAIN DIPWAD!
anonymous wrote:
To all you morons who are paying for it, try searching the web for mirrors and download it free from there still. It takes maybe an extra 2 seconds of your time.
It would also be a good idea to save the .exe so you won't have to bother with it again in the future.

This sucks! I downloaded DeadAIM when it was free, but now they came out with DeadAIM 4.0! Does anyone know how to get it and/or have it and want to email it to me? Here is an idea...If you want DeadAIM and know someone who has it have them put it on a disk and give it to you or they can email it to you! Make sure they send you the installer not the actual program! Sweet...Huh? Hope that helps

See, Keith... these guys are a perfect example of why you need to implement the ability to lock/close threads or nuke individual posts.
While I, personally, am opposed to editing the ramblings of people, even idiots, I have no problem squelching comments out entirely (you will see this quite clearly in poking around my forums). And having the ability to close a thread off to future comments is quite useful as well.
In a site such as this, it might even be a good idea to have thread commenting automatically 'expire' after 4 days, or a week, or somesuch. I don't do this with my sites, but I've been seriously considering it. It keeps old muck from getting stirred back up.

I have seen these rude comments and would like to say I use DeadAIM and got it for free. There are two ways to do this. You can do it how I did it and go to http://www.softnews.ro/public/cat/10/4/1/10-4-28.shtml or you can just ask one of your buddys on your buddy list that has it to send it to you. It is very simple and it only took me 2 days to figure it out. I am suprised by these people who dont even try to get or do somthing without yelling or blaming it on someone else. If you think I am some computer freak that think he knows it all then consider this... I am only 11 and am on the computer not that often. Good luck on who ever who is trying to find DeadAIM. Oh wait you don't even need luck for this one. Hehe.

Trust me, I will be. I delete stupid comments all the time. For instance, those last three comments were actually from the same weirdo.
Plus, some posts just get too many anonymous people so I can't tell who said what, so I'm probably going to change the comments so that if someone doesn't enter a name it shows their IP address instead of anonymous.
I also have to implement two other things: 1. "throttling" to prevent both people commenting repeatedly so that, for instance, someone couldn't write a script and post thousands of comments, and 2. Something to prevent duplicate comments from being posted when people refresh the page and hit the button to resubmit form data.
Any other suggestions?
M. Bean wrote:
point 1 is generally called a "Post Rate Limiter" and in most cases, they will autoban someone's IP for a day or two if they try to post 3 times within the cooldown period. http://shacknews.com/ does this in their insanely complex forum system.
If you haven't thought about it, point 2 is best done with a generated unique id for each page render that gets passed with the POST data. If this doesn't make any sense, ask me and I'll explain in greater detail.
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:

So you'd store the ID in the DB and check it on the next post? Why is that better than just comparing the value of all the fields?
M. Bean wrote:
Aside from speed... I don't store the ID in the DB permanently... I generate a unique ID based on the time, and when a post gets submitted, the unique ID is added to a list, and sticks around for 10 minutes. (whenever a new post is submitted, before comparison, it deletes postid's that are older than 10 mins old, then you can do a blanket search without a conditional) If another post comes in with that ID, it ignores it. This prevents against both rapid posting by someone who tries to submit multiple messages from the same page without refreshing and it catches those accidental double-clicks.
This method can also be easily applied (timestamping+ip as a uniqueid) to that post-rate limiter that you're wanting to do, might I add. keep track of 2 fields, the time and IP, and you can stamp out both rapid fire posting AND double posts.
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:
Wow, neat technique! And if you generate a hash that's impossible for the user to guess (not just a concatenation of the timestamp and ip), then it's totally impossible to fake. Woo.
Where do you store the postid's for the last 10 minutes? Flat file, MySQL table, MySQL RAM table?
M. Bean wrote:
A single MySQL table, but there are arguments for flat files and RAM tables, I just did what was easiest and fastest for me to implement. And this is why I'm a "software architect" as opposed to a "programmer".

Or, you could just use trillian which does all that AND supports multiple protocols.
