From now on, anyone who leaves the name field blank in a comment will not have his name show up as "anonymous", but rather his IP address. I'm doing that for two reasons. First, I hope it'll serve as a little bit of social engineering and discourage people from leaving the name blank. It's still possible to actually type in 'anonymous', or 'anon', or 'Joe Smith' if you want to. Second, this will at least give a unique "name" to refer to when responding to comments if the person leaves his name blank, so that we can at least know who said what, if two "anonymous"es were the same person or different people, etc.
Finally, I'm now storing the IP address and REMOTE_HOST value of all commenters, which is something I should have been doing from the beginning.
This is fun, I should post about evolution more often.
