Maybe the shred of reality behind sayings like "XML brings us one step closer to universal data access" is that any standard document format used in publicly available files (think rss...) goes a long way to having widespread client-side software that can use those documents. If everyone rolled their own document format for things like that, it's harder on the client-side developers to support them. Maybe? I agree there's too much fuss, but maybe a sprinkle of truth is in there somewhere.
