I grew up hunting so I'm definitely not anti-gun at all. Still I'm kind of curious as to why you need one. I'm not bashing you at all, just curious.

Thanks Oliver. I'm actually planning to go to a firing range nearby to ask for their advice and to try out different types of guns. I need a bit of an education. The only things I've ever fired are a .22 handgun and a .22 rifle. Oh, and a BB gun
Scott, I've been asking myself the same question. I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, and we even have an alarm system on our house[1], so it's not so much for home defense that I'd want a gun. The conclusion I've pretty much come to is that I think people should own guns. I almost think it's an American duty to own a gun; I consider it patriotic.[2][3] I think that accounts for most of my desire to own a gun. Most of the rest is a mix of the self/home defense issue, and a feeling that "I want one" (and there's nothing wrong with that
)
Footnotes:
[1]: Our alarm system actually did stop a break-in when we weren't home about a year or two ago, btw.
[2]: Plus, I really admire Swiss culture.
[3]: Frankly, I think people should be allowed to carry guns with them wherever they choose. AFAIK, 33 states have concealed carry laws, but unfortunately NJ isn't one of them.

Just because you're provided a right doesn't mean you have to use it.

It all depends on what you want to use the gun for. For self-defense, I like my Glock 22.

It's easy to clean, accurate, and powerful.
But, for target shooting, .40 caliber ammo really adds up. So, I use my Browning .22 pistol for target practice.

I'd also suggest going to a gun class before buying a gun so the instructor can give you some more tips on buying a gun.
