Tim Bray on offshoring

Tim Bray on offshoring:

It occurs to me that first of all, things that sound too good to be true usually are, and second, this kind of gross pricing anomaly cannot possibly survive in a connected global transparent market economy, which is more or less what we live in.

I've long been skeptical that all of America's programming/technical jobs are going to be farmed off to India.

Offshore works best for large organzations with established contacts and infrastructure overseas.

Keep in mind their are a ton of "offshore" companies, that can promise all this cost savings and other advantages, most of it BS, all these companies care about is being the middleman and collecting their fee, and if your lucky will put your work in the hands of a competent person. All these companies do offshore is just put ads in papers, recruit a few candidates and throw work at them.. its mostly a facade...

Ask yourself, soemone just offered you $5000 to create a content driven website, now would you rather take it on or offer an offshore outfit $1000 to do it? If you decided offshore consider:
- what happens when they dont understand the scope and give you a smaller app then what you requested?
- what about when clients makes last minute changes (that never happens Smiley? can they accomodate that?
-What if they cant deliver? (guess whos left holding te bag)
-Who are you going to trust? that's $1000 of your money.
-What about maintainence will they be around in a year?
-Are they going to be available and willing to fix any major bugs that crop up?

my 2cents, Id rather do the work , because I know it will get done, and get done right..
