btw there's obviously a limited amount of oil. how long there's been life on earth, average amount of biomass created each year in that time frame, how much gets converted to oil - and there's your upper bound. as we learn more those numbers change, but if you give high guesses on all you'll have a conservative number.
and cute including estimates from 1910 - you're aware that various space agencies are involved in mapping oil reserves. obviously we're finding more - standard oil didn't have satellites.
cheaper and more environmentally friendly methods of generating electricity exist. my home state of kansas has huge energy reserves if we'd invest in wind energy. and yes, there are idiots on the left that oppose wind farms, but sane people on the right and left see huge potential in wind energy. if the gov't would just invest a fraction of the subsidies it feeds oil and gas into wind energy american dependance on oil would drop considerably.
and surely from a national security standpoint if not an environmental standpoint that's a good thing?

hey, donncha recommended i mention this here. molly ivins just endorsed howard dean. in addition yesterday howard dean released his pamphlet, common sense for a new century. and earlier this week we raised over $50,000 in less then a day for iowa's sole democrat in the house. the dean campaign did it to try and gain majorities in the house and senate. and they're committed to doing that even if dean doesn't get the nomination.
the net is finally beginning to show how it can engage citizens in their democracy in ways we geeks have been saying it could for years.
