Because people want there to be a post-nationalist "one-world" state. That's part of it. That's why people love the UN so much... if people considered themselves "citizens of the world" it would do away with the evils of nationalism and patriotism, which are considered atavistic in todays "enlightened" age.
I'd really recommend reading Conflict of Visions, by the way.
