Usually I save the alcohol until after I finish up programming. Though I do agree that having a drink very well could get rid of your programming block (writer's block, but for nerds).

I discovered the same effect while in college -- found 1 or even 2 drinks would greatly improve my coding. Talked it out with a friend and we finally put it down to a greater willingness to take risks and a different perspective.

Yup, found that out when I was in first year. It was around St. Patrick's Day, and I'd piles of assignments to finish. Myself and my buddies had been out on the beer (or rather, cider back then) earlier and I was a little, um, merry. Anyway, to cut a long story short I went into a lab class I had, did the teaching assistant's exercises (stormed that!) and then headed off to a free lab to do the programming assignments I had. The all worked without even a misplaced bracket!
I've done it since and it always works... odd that...

Sometimes. Sometimes I'm just feeling too uptight to "commit" to code to whatever project I'm working on, and I just need to mellow out a little.
