Indices are important

Yes, indices are important, and one of the most commonly neglected things by people who don't know what they're doing.

Wait a minute... didn't mean to imply that Jeremy doesn't know what he's doing

Whenever I design tables indices are the second thing I think about. The order is "What fields are needed?" and then "What fields am I likely to search or join on?"
