Via Slashdot, supposedly AOL is integrating its Instant Messenger with ICQ. Semi-neat news. I also didn't know that they're working on GAIM for Windows. Back before Jabber was released, I had high hopes for it. It hasn't caught on like I wished it had...
I'm seriously considering integrating Smarty with my nascent content management system. As I've resolved my design issues, it turns out Smarty would be an excellent fit. The one hurdle I've hit, however, is a problem with permissions on the directories that have to be writeable by Smarty for its compiled pages and cached output.
Smarty creates files under the same permissions as Apache runs on, which is typically nobody:nobody (user 'nobody' in group 'nobody'). If they're not created with permissions set to world writable (777) then even I can't delete them, which is what happened last night as I was testing. That's no good, since there's no way I can use software which creates files I can't delete, and have to bother my host(esses) to delete for me, which I did last night.
I'm not enough of a unix head to readily know what to do, or even if I'm going to be able to do what I want. I've been searching the main Smarty site, the Smarty weblog, and I'm just now starting to search through the mailing lists (not to mention Google). I can probably modify Smarty itself to fix this, though I'd rather not have to do that. Also, I can probably write a PHP script to delete the files, since that would run under the same permissions as Smarty -- so I would have a last-resort uninstall option.
If anyone has any help they can offer I'd appreciate it.
People seemed to enjoy the XML-RPC one-liner to ping weblogs.com for RSS, so I've added pinging weblogs.com as an example in my XML-RPC documentation.
That's it, I'm going to read the Chamber of Secrets again before I see Harry Potter. I was just watching this cool interview with Daniel Radcliffe, and I had to turn it off because I didn't want spoilers about the movie.
