MySQL is good at what it does, but is NOT a full-featured RDMS. And by "not full-featured" I mean "lacks support for basic SQL that even Access can do, like sub-selects. And it could have transactions or at least better locking while it's at it."
It's good for hacking around and for simple CMS systems (ie, Slashdot runs on MySQL with few problems), but I wouldn't build an ecommerce site with it.
In my experience lots of hacks out there using MySQL don't even know the value of a JOIN(!) let alone why sub-selects are a good feature to have.
