Perl.com: These Weeks on Perl 6 (10 Feb - 2 Mar 2002).

Via the CWSApps what's new page, the RealONE Player has been released. Is it possible that this player will suck less than their previous ones? Probably not.

Via diveintomark, The world's flags given letter grades. Clearly there's no accounting for taste. He gave the US flag a C+. The US flag is one of the best in the world. And Gambia with the highest score? What's up with that?

diveintomark: "Nothing, not even music, not even trance music, not even DJ Tiesto trance music, not even DJ Tiesto trance music on a surround sound system, not even DJ Tiesto trance music on a surround sound system with bass boost turned way up -- nothing can drown out the sound of a howling beagle." Beware the power of the beagle (picture coming tonight Smiley

Via Boing Boing, a conspiracy theory: Was the Pentagon actually hit by a truck bomb? "As everyone knows, on 11 September, less than an hour after the attack on the World Trade Centre, an airplane collided with the Pentagon. The Associated Press first reported that a booby-trapped truck had caused the explosion. The Pentagon quickly denied this. The official US government version of events still holds. Here's a little game for you: Take a look at these photographs and try to find evidence to corroborate the official version. It's up to you to Hunt the Boeing!"

Via Boing Boing, someone's actually using Blosxom! Very cool.

I've been looking for a decent blogging tool for a while, and the one I've settled on is Blosxom. It's free (as in speech), and it's so insanely simple I figure I should be able to write scripts to add archiving and searching in a matter of minutes, whenever I can be arsed. This is Good. Laziness is a very underrated virtue (as are Hubris and Impatience), but speaking as a sometime perl geek I've learned to appreciate them and having a 31-line blogging program with just one user-configurable variable that I can extend in my sleep is way better than having to mess around learning something the size of Windows XP.</blockquote>

The Flangy News: Am I Bond or Not?. "For some purchases in life there is common sense. For everything else, there are proceeds from the sale of MSFT." Drool.

Via Dane Carlson, Business 2.0: Boo! And the 100 Other Dumbest Moments in e-Business History. #25: "eTour invites Mahir Cagri, the lovelorn Turkish gentleman whose "I Kiss You!" homepage became a Web phenomenon, to the United States in December 1999 to present him with a "key to cyberspace"; it then sends him on a media tour through New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles." I didn't know they did that!. Whatever happened to Mahir? Smiley

Via Slayage.com, here's what looks like a great review of that awesome episode of Angel Monday night. "Anyone who says they prefer the lighter episodes of Angel is a moron. Plain and simple: the dark, tragic, violent episodes are the best ones, and if last week's wasn't a good indication of that, then this week's certainly was. After an uneven season that has seen a bit too much romance and not enough pain, Angel is back doing what it does best, and damn does it do it good. ... The bottom line is, this episode was packed with action, drama, and unpredictability, and that, my friends, I'll take over a forced unrequited love plot-line any day, Cordy/Angel shippers be damned."

He also lets us know how long we have to wait until the next new episode of Angel... until April 15th. "Five weeks is a long time to wait, but at least now we have something worth waiting for." true

I have to make a list of all Buffy gossip sites out there. There seem like a ton. Bill Humphries got the link via The Spoiler Slayer, there's BTVS-Tabula Rasa, the main site, Buffy.com, Slayage.com. I'll look for more later, but if anyone has any that are good, feel free to leave a comment!

From MorelikeThis, "Are you a Redemptionista? Do you think William the Bloody, a.k.a. Spike (played by James Marsters), can be redeemed though good works, the Scooby Gang, and that chip in his head? If so, then you're probably reading Tabula Rasa, the site for Buffy fans who think Spike might be a good guy after all."

Nooo, in Buffy lore having no soul ==> being evil (but not: having no soul <==> being evil). Unless Spike gets a soul he'll always be evil.

Via LtU, Linus Torvalds on Coding Style.

If you want to see a system that was more thoroughly designed, you should probably point not to Dennis and Ken, but to systems like L4 and Plan-9, and people like Jochen Liedtk and Rob Pike.

And notice how they aren't all that popular or well known? "Design" is like a religion - too much of it makes you inflexibly and unpopular.

The very architecture of UNIX has very much been an evolution. Sure, there
are some basic ideas, but basic ideas do not make a system.

Yeah! Just saw the first commercial of the season for Cadbury cream eggs... aaooohhhhaaahhhh, drool.

I really have to do my homework on that cult. They have this practice of having a strict relationship of mentors and disciples, where every member has another member assigned to him as a mentor. They base it all off of Matthew 28:18-20, but they're out there. A disciple has to confess his sin to his mentor, and from what I understand a mentor has a large degree of control over his disciple's life.

From Reveal.org, here are some quotes showing how extreme their doctrine is on this issue:

To not have a discipleship partner is to be rebellious to God and to the leadership of this congregation.... The person that you are discipling must believe, must trust, that you are out for God and their best interest. Because, you see, there is going to be some advice they will not understand. But if they trust that you are out for God and their best interest, they will obey.... They must believe your judgement is better than theirs.

> -- Kip McKean
> Discipleship Partners
> 1988 Boston Leadership Conference
> Ultimately, if we do not trust these people [disciplers], we do not trust God. To the extent that I trust my discipler, I am in reality trusting God.
> -- Teresa Ferguson
> Boston Bulletin, October 22, 1989

Here's a very skewed piece on baptism. It's amazing the odd places dispensationalism brings you. I should hijack the cult kids' Bible study and turn it into a study of covenant theology.
