not a bad idea, actually...

Oh yeah... thing is... I want Unreal to run more than I want Visual Studio to run - I'm afraid if I upgrade to anything Unreal won't run as well

If you get Win2k, will you be giving up any fantastic Windows XP Pro features?
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:
By the way, do you know anything about academic pricing?
The other bitch thing I didn't mention is that the place I got it from charges atrocious prices for shipping. I'm not sure where else to get academic products, since you can't just go to CompUSA and get the academic versions. You wouldn't happen to know anywhere good to get academic versions of software, would you?
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:
Hey, as long as I don't give up any of the fantastic Win 98 features I don't care, since I'm mostly satisfied with what I have now.

I think this might help. It's the software shop at eFollet.
Win XP Pro upgrade is $99

But Win XP should have some fantastic features over Win2k. I mean... it's an entire OS upgrade. Those rumors about incremental improvements from MSFT can't all be true. :-)
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:
Thanks. Unfortunately that's the place I bought Visual Studio from, and they charge crazy shipping prices. Which is another reason I'm upset if I return this thing, because I will have wasted lots of money in shipping
On the other hand, I'm upset if I buy Windows XP Pro from them, because then I have to pay crazy shipping prices again rather than having both things shipped together in the first place. So either way I'm not happy!

Well, I just haven't bothered to upgrade to XP yet, I'm still on Win2k (no academic or employee discounts), and I VASTLY prefer 2k to 9x for developing (scrollback in terminal windows, task manager, etc.), but I'm not heavy into games, still on a P3-550 over here.
I just figured that since everyone else is going to XP there might be copies of 2k people are willing to part with.
I hear the multi-user swtiching support in XP is great for family computers when the kids want to play a game but the parent doesn't want to close out a bunch of apps. Though I don't have kids myself.

Try ProVantage...
$79 for Win XP Pro Upgrade
$5 for NJ shipping.
Although I do not know about their reputation.
You can also try and locate a MSFT authorized reseller.

Ahh ha, another fellow student who is still using Windows 9x, I am not the only one (well, other than Simon).
Even with academic pricing XP still doesn't seem worth the effort, some of my friends suggest cough borrowing it from them and using a cough keygen. But like, isn't that wrong or something?

I'm using WinXP Pro here and I strongly feel that it's the best Microsoft OS I've ever used. I upgraded to it from Win2k Pro, which I was also quite satisfied with. Either one would be a worthwhile upgrade, and as a side note, Unreal Tournament 2k3 was optimised for Windows XP, considering the Win9x line of operating systems have kind of been out of the limelight for some time now.

Ok, so what's the difference between WinXP Pro and WinXP Home?
Diego A. wrote:
I know WinXP comes with a server (IIS) and some other cool stuff. You can get help choosing an edition here:

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that ... didn't they !-)
I had to upgrade my machine at work for exactly the same reason.
I prefer Win2k Pro over XP
Keith (http://www.keithdevens.com/) wrote:
Well, they didn't forget to mention it, they just don't make it obvious at all.

from what i've heard, winxp home is total crap. if you were to get any xp, pro would be the way to go. i do know a few people with the home edition, and they have crashing problems a lot. people that i know who have xp pro says it is really good, but the networking kind of sucks...

I believe that the option to upgrade is not the best, the best thing you can use is download eMule o eDonkey, the seek for win2k server iso, then you burn a CD and go directly to install a operating system that is better than XP pro or home. We have a trial version of the ASP.NET, this thing works better in this operative system than XP, but if you really want to do this, you better should not have this page made with PHP. .NET is a good technology, but do you know what could we do if PHP is more used than .NET? Would you like to enrich a men (Bill Gates) who has ruin our lives making us purchase every time he wants a new operative system? PHP rocks and Linux is the better choice to make anything in the web. Good luck.

Maybe you could find a cheap copy of Win2k or something.
