Yeah, you were right, the 16th was correct. But I was wrong on two counts - for some reason I thought the 12th was a Friday, when it was actually a Sunday. If I had known it was a Sunday, I would have thought it was the 16th too

It's quite possible that the 16th /is/ correct. That gives a few days for the real die-hard fans, who'll watch it whenever they can normal work week be damned, lots of chances to see it, while easing (somewhat, maybe) the pressure on the weekend for actual families who just want to see the movie.
Though I guess for a Star Wars movie, whenever it opens there will be long lines for a while.
