EU scandals

I read this bit about EU scandals earlier today at InstaPundit, and now I've just read this post from Steven Den Beste about the obvious contempt one EU beaurocrat has for the voters.

Why anyone in Europe thinks it's attractive to put themselves under a body of unelected beaurocrats is beyond me.

This also highlights another theme for me. I've argued in the past[1] that liberalism is inherently anti-democratic... hence the reliance on judicial activism, rather than on the decision of the voters, to push their agenda.

Footnotes:
[1]: unfortunately, I never wound up finishing and posting that weblog entry Smiley I wish I had because I'd be able to reference the quote (heard from a guest on the Sean Hannity show) that spurred me to write and which supported my point

Tell me, does the US have referenda at the Federal Level? What's that you say...no? And why doesn't the US have referenda at the federal level? Might it be that you can't expect people to be informed of every nuance of political legislation and also carry on with their own lives too?

Anti-democratic you say, neither you or I live in a Democracy, we live in a Constitutional Republic whose business is executed by elected representatives, that's why you send people to the US Congress, I send TD's to Dail Eireann and we both send Senators to our respective Senate.

This anti-democratic liberalism nonsense is just that nonsense.
When was the last time you folks had a referendum on abortion for example? We've had them here in "liberal old Europe", we don't fight to uphold or abolish a supreme court ruling, we actually have a vote on the matter.
