ok i can hardly believe what bush has just said he is constantly contradicting himself! He says yes i am for diversity but no i am not for affirmative action. We come from a country that according to the yr 2000 census has 75% caucasian and 25% minority (blacks,hispanics etc.) For years these persons have been discriminated to against and still are being discrimminated against due to stereotyping ! As Senator John Edwards says "We should be expanding access to education for all Americans, not limiting opportunities," Michigan has the right to have diversity on campus! Because we all come from different cultures and background and studies have shown that persons who study on a diverse campus learn more in and out of classes. so is having a more diverse campus racist? no it isnt

and by the way i didnt vote for bush HAH!

Even I, who dislikes Bush, agrees with what the man said (at least the bit Keith quoted) here. If you want to get more ethnic minorities (or whatever the pc term is) into univeristies/colleges then you've gotta make sure that everyone has equal opportunities from the start of their lives. You can't just alter the grades when they get to uni to make it seem like it's all equal.

I'm for diversity too. Hey, if a minority is intelligent enough to get into Harvard, or any other college, or even the lowliest job, I would back him all the way there. But I'm African-American, and I got into Yale, and it wasn't because I was black or because I came from a dirt-poor town in California. I earned it, and I am for any person who earns his way to a school to get it, and am anti someone taking that spot because they happen to be black, white, green, or whatever. In this country, you earn what you get, and it isn't fair to take that away.

Oh, and I voted for Bush too.

Opportunities would not be limited without affimative action. Every single person has an equal opportunity of getting into college or getting a good job. It just depend on how well you work for it. I don't care if you're black, white, hispanic, man, or woman... it should ONLY and i mean only, be based on your intelligence, talent, and determination!!!

P.S. If I could vote i would probably vote democrat, but Bush is definitely right about this one. Way to go George!

There's this twisted logic on the left that says if you discriminate, somehow you're promoting equality. It makes no sense.

It's pretty sad that when my brother tells me that all of the top students from our high school got deferred from their first-choice schools this year, my first thought is "Too bad none of them are hispanic or black, they would have gotten in for sure".

I am Hispanic and Affirmative Action sucks. This county has always been about hard work and being self made. Now that Slavery is illegal and Rap is competing with rock it's time to quite these bitchy Civil Rights movements. It's over people get over it. Time to look to the future and profiling for a job or education is wrong. Profiling for terrorism and crime is what we need to focus on. Viva Patriot Act 100%!!!

I absolutley do not agree with affirmative action. Affirmative Action is racist in itself, You have to look at race in this issue . There are multiple support groups for the minoritys. Lower income familys are more qualified for finacial aid even at community colledge level.Its also a form of communism. It doesent bring the minoritys up to the level of the "whites" or where they thinks the whites are at but it brings the whites down by lowering there chances of succsess.

Affirmative action SUCKS. Just because someone is a minority does not meant that they should get an unfair advantage in selective admittance institutions. There is nothing stopping minorities from trying to recieve a good education, and it is their own fault for being stupid. For instance, my high school is 63% african american, and only there are only TWO african americans that placed top 40 in the class. That does not mean that they should recieve unfair help when applying to colleges, it simply means that THEY SHOULD GET OFF THEIR LAZY ASSES AND START TRYING IN SCHOOL.

Affirmative action is a stupid, racist system that claims to help blacks while insulting their intelligence and ignoring whites who are just as dirt poor as many members of minorities. If they want to help the poor out and end racism and inequality, then they should help out all poor people, not just blacks and hispanics, but whites and asians to, and should give families financial support to send their kids to school. If those kids do well in school when they go, then they should get good jobs. But black or white, if their families have the finances in line for the kids to go to high school and college, and they are healthy, then they have no excuse other than laziness for poor grades and should not be rewarded for their lack of work ethic.

Affirmative action needs to be drastically revamped. It worked fine in 1965, but nowadays, it needs to cover more. The quota system works fine in american society, and provides ethically and racially diverse workplaces and schools. But it also needs to include the impoverished of America. It needs to adress that poor youth applying for college are often overlooked because of family history or slightly less than acceptable grades. affirmative action needs to fix this by accepting a certian amount of youth below the poverty line, and get them in and keep them in college.
If this can be done, they will not only provide a mainstay in american economy, but they will be more likely to raise a stable family, as opposed to living in the slums and working at mcdonalds.

GET RID OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION. JUST BECAUSE YOUR BLACK OH, EXCUSE ME LET ME BE "POLITICALLY CORRECT" AFRICAN-AMERICAN DOESNT MEAN YOU CAN GET INTO A COLLEGE SOLELY ON THAT. (same with anyother race, INCLUDING whites).

guess what, you go to school and you make your own decisions. You want to cut class and not study and fail, go for it.

you want to study and be diligent and get as high of GPA as you can get, thats great.

BUT if the first example gets in over the 2nd example because he/she is black is BULL!

No sane person would oppose diversity, I mean who wants to be in a homogeneous environment? But, affirmative action creates a despicable artificial diversity- not a natural one.
