A Lisp programmer knows the value of everything, but the cost of nothing. – Alan Perlis

  1. Fox News: Obama: Surge Succeeded Beyond ‘Wildest Dreams’ (via):

The troop surge in Iraq has been more successful than anyone could have imagined, Barack Obama conceded Thursday in his first-ever interview on FOX News’ “The O’Reilly Factor.”

As recently as July, the Democratic presidential candidate declined to rate the surge a success, but said it had helped reduce violence in the country. On Thursday, Obama acknowledged the 2007 increase in U.S. troops has benefited the Iraqi people.

“I think that the surge has succeeded in ways that nobody anticipated,” Obama said while refusing to retract his initial opposition to the surge. “I’ve already said it’s succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.”

Google Chrome's EULA

Google Chrome EULA Claims Ownership of Everything You Create on Chrome, From Blog Posts to Emails (via). That's misleading... they merely reserve the right to reproduce anything you write anywhere they want to, but you still own the copyright.

Evidently Google Docs has a similar clause in their EULA.

Update: Google is removing that language from the EULA (via), and applying the new license retroactively. What about the matching clauses in their other products?

Update: Official Google Blog: Update to Google Chrome's terms of service.

  1. Moritz Lenz's blogs on Perl 6, intended for people familiar with Perl 5, have done a lot to get me re-interested in Perl 6, despite how long it's taken to develop.

My understanding is that a full release of Perl 6 is probably another year away, but it may have been worth the wait. Perl 6 looks like a really fun language.

  2. Giuliani on Obama:

"I would say Barack Obama has never governed a city, never governed a state, never governed an agency, never run a military unit, never run anything," Giuliani said on CBS's "Early Show."

One thing is clear: JavaScript is the assembly language of the Internet, at least for a few years now.

Edit: One more post on TraceMonkey (to read).

  1. Buchanan on Palin:

Liberals howl that Palin has no experience, no qualifications to be president of the United States. But the lady has more executive experience than McCain, Joe Biden and Obama put together.

None of them has ever started or run a business as Palin did. None of them has run a giant state like Alaska, which is larger than California and Texas put together. And though Alaska is not populous, Gov. Palin has as many constituents as Nancy Pelosi or Biden.

And her experience as governor of Alaska, dealing with the oil industry and pipeline agreements with Canada, certainly compares favorably with that of Barack Obama, a community organizer who dealt in the mommy issues of food stamps and rent subsidies.

Quick fact check... Alaska is more populous than Pelosi's district but less populous than Delaware, Biden's state, according to Wikipedia.

Hating ASP.NET again

The more I use ASP.NET, the more I can't stand it. I'm using the ASP.NET Ajax stuff and it'd be so much faster if I just did everything "manually" rather than navigating this maze of UpdatePanels and RegisterClientScriptBlocks and AsyncPostBackTriggers.

Web apps are just XmlHttpRequest + some JSON and CSS and DOM manipulation. I already know all that stuff. Why does Microsoft fail so hard at simplification that they make it more complex?
